Flower and jewel names, virtue names, and the great revival of medieval names.
Victorian parents looked backward and outward. The Gothic revival brought back Edith, Maud, Alfred and Percival; a love of nature gave Lily, Violet, Ivy and Daisy; and novels and poems launched names of their own. Nicknames such as Minnie, Nellie and Bessie were often given as full names.
